About
Hi, I am Niek, nice to meet you
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Radiologist | Associate Professor | Expert in Quantitative Cardiovascular Imaging
As a dedicated Cardiovascular and Thoracic Radiologist, I specialize in quantitative cardiovascular imaging, with a particular focus on advanced cardiac MRI, PET-CT, and SPECT. My work is centered on improving the understanding and management of cardiovascular health, especially in athletes and individuals with metabolic syndrome. In my role as an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, I am fortunate to mentor PhD candidates and contribute to research that has practical implications for patient care.
Current Roles
Radiologist at University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG)
Associate Professor (UHD) at the University of Groningen (RUG), with ius promovendi
Principal Investigator in research on quantitative cardiovascular imaging, particularly the athlete’s heart and metabolic syndrome
Research and Contributions
Author of over 75 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, focusing on advancements in cardiac MRI and multimodal imaging.
Developer of I.AM.Heart, a resource providing cardiac MRI reference data, which is widely used by clinicians and researchers.
Contributed to the refinement of imaging techniques, including 4D-flow MRI and phase-contrast 3D MRI, with the goal of enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient care.
Focus Areas
Quantitative Cardiovascular Imaging
My research emphasizes the use of advanced imaging to better understand heart function in high-risk populations, such as athletes and individuals with metabolic syndrome.
Collaboration and Mentorship
I work closely with colleagues and students to advance research that can be directly applied to clinical practice, with a focus on improving patient outcomes through better diagnostics.
Education and Credentials
– MD, University of Utrecht (2005)

Research Philosophy
I believe in the power of imaging to transform our understanding of cardiovascular health. By focusing on practical research that has a direct impact on clinical practices, I aim to contribute to better patient care and outcomes. I am always open to collaboration and discussions with peers who share an interest in advancing the field.
